Badagry Recreational Park (BRP): Community Support and UVOBPI’s Intervention .The Badagry Recreational Park (BRP) is a beautiful community park, landscaped with trees, flowers, and a well-maintained lawn. It was once one of the largest recreational parks in Lagos State.
According to the BRP management team, the park has struggled due to inadequate financial support. In their words: “We lack financial support. As managers, we realised we cannot do it alone, so we approached the United Voice of Badagry People Initiative (UVOBPI). They obliged and came to our aid by repairing the gazebos’ roofing — removing the grass-covered tops and replacing them with aluminium decorative sheets and necessary wooden roof works.”
The BRP management committee added:
“We are hopeful that other donors or sponsors will support this cause soon, Chief Hunkanlin Afolabi, the Zonlin Gbedudugan of Badagry Kingdom, who is the founder of the Centre for Heritage Preservation in Badagry.

“For our organisation, assisting the BRP has not been an easy task, as we realised a lot needed to be done. The most worrying issue was that five gazebos were destroyed by a rainstorm. Considering their poor condition—and the value the BRP brings to the Badagry community—supporting the park became a priority for us.”
What UVOBPI Has Done to Help
A meeting referenced UCSBRP001 was held on 24 August 2023, with the agenda focused on reviewing the commencement of UCSBRP001 Phase 1 — Gazebo 001.
The meeting was chaired by the founder of UVOBPI.
The founder began by appreciating everyone who had worked tirelessly towards achieving UVOBPI’s objectives and projects. He then addressed the agenda directly and restated the aims of the Gazebo 001 reconstruction project.
Given the severe damage caused by the rainstorm and the overall condition of the park, UVOBPI donated NGN 250,000 to support the reconstruction of the first gazebo.
According to the founder:
“The organisation needs additional funds to achieve its target for the Gazebo 001 reconstruction. With the total estimated cost at about NGN 2.5 million as of August 2023, committed donors and individuals with a voluntary spirit are essential for us to complete this project.” Although the project officially began on Saturday, 26 August 2023, progress suffered significant delays due to funding challenges. However, we are pleased to announce that Gazebo 001 has now been completed, though a few finishing tasks remain outstanding.

Project Title: Uphold Community Strength – Mini Independent Library and Small Charity Shop
Executive Summary
Project Code: UCSMILASCS 001
Implementing Organisation: United Voice of Badagry People Initiative (UVOBPI)
The Uphold Community Strength project is a community empowerment initiative designed to address educational gaps and socio-economic challenges in Badagry, Lagos State. Implemented by the United Voice of Badagry People Initiative (UVOBPI), a values-driven NGO guided by Transparency, Empowerment, Accountability, Management, Communication, and Organisational Perception (TEAMCO), the project seeks to establish a Mini Independent Library alongside a Small Charity Shop as mutually reinforcing community assets.
The Mini Library will provide access to educational materials, promote literacy, and serve as a training and engagement space for youth and community members. The Charity Shop will support sustainability by generating modest income while offering affordable goods to residents and volunteering opportunities for skills development. Through structured participation, beneficiaries will develop interpersonal, organisational, leadership, and communication skills, strengthening local capacity and encouraging civic responsibility. The project aligns with UVOBPI’s operational objectives ELPD/004/O3, PHB/005, and UCS/PPN003/UO1, and builds on UVOBPI’s long-standing advocacy for improved educational conditions in Badagry.

Educational infrastructure and access to learning resources in Badagry remain critically inadequate. In June 2013, UVOBPI published “Ajara Senior Grammar School: A Case for Concern, documenting extreme overcrowding where nearly 240 pupils shared a single classroom. This situation, supported by an awareness video (http://bit.ly/1gatZPP), exemplifies the broader systemic challenges affecting educational development in the community.
Despite ongoing advocacy, many residents—particularly young people—continue to lack access to basic learning spaces, books, and skills-building opportunities. There is also a need for community-based initiatives that combine education, empowerment, and sustainability..
Project Description
The project will establish:
A Mini Independent Library – providing books, learning materials, quiet study space, and skills-based activities.
A Small Charity Shop – selling donated items at affordable prices to support community needs and generate funds to sustain the library. The two components are intentionally linked: the charity shop supports operational sustainability, while the library serves as a hub for education, training, and civic engagement.
Project Aim
To strengthen community capacity in Badagry by improving access to educational resources and practical skills development through a sustainable, community-managed Mini Library and Charity Shop.
Specific Objectives
Improve access to educational materials and learning spaces for Badagry residents.
Equip participants with transferable life and workplace skills.
Promote community participation, volunteering, and leadership development.
Establish a modest income-generating model to support long-term project sustainability.
